Requiem for the Conqueror Forbidden Borders Book 1 eBook W Michael Gear

Excellent book.

That said I am deducting one star for the sheer number of errors in the print. Many context breaks are totally missed as the book shifts from one characters point of view to another. One minute you are reading about character X on planet Y and the next you are reading about character A on planet C. All without any type of break in the print.

There are also tons of words that are misprinted. The becomes Die. Ily (a character name) becomes By. Those are examples there are tons more that you will need to decipher if you read this book.

The book as a whole is as good as I remember when I read it the 1st time 30 years ago. Its a shame how this quality manuscript has been treated in translation from print to eBook.

Requiem for the Conqueror Forbidden Borders Book 1 eBook W Michael Gear Reviews

When I first began this book, I was moderately hopeful but after a chapter or two, I felt some misgivings--comparing this to the well-considered world of...say, Honor Harrington, I felt it was interesting but not particularly 'great'.

Yet. I finished the book, found I could hardly put it down, and upon completion, couldn't help but get hold of the electronic sequels. While the panoply (right word? Screw it...) of characters was diverse enough, the declared mysteries the characters had to endure along with other factors somewhat telegraphed the results and character resolutions for me. And I'm not necessarily the brightest tool in the shed, let me say.

All in all, entertaining and fun--and pleased that this universe and its characters are self contained enough to be 'locked' into a trilogy. Much like sequels that get churned out as potboilers, this may well avoid the fate of such serial characters like Tarzan and such.
Requiem for the Conqueror
by W. Michael Gear

I know that Michael Gear has been waiting patiently for me to get through this dramatic and inspiring encompassing story. The book encapsulates so many ideas that it takes time to go through the text and comprehend its meanings. Forbidden borders is a thought experiment in technology and mankind. If mankind were forced to face its own face its own faults and dark tenancies could mankind rise above petty greet, and destruction. Would access to technology, and distant worlds change the outcome of mankind's ultimate ulterior motives. Could a computer program figure out how to solve mankind's problems? Could mankind be forced to change for the better? Find balance to their desires and willingness to control ultimate power.
Lord Commander Staffa, the Star Butcher is a construct of mankind and computer programs. If a child can be changed and manipulated to create the ultimate weapon. Could mankind find a way to change its destructive nature? What both the leaders who have changed Staffa's life dramatically, taking away his wife and child, and the computer program that created him did not expect is that he can grow beyond their formulated predictions. What they thought would destroy him, would make him stronger? His goal in life is find a way to go beyond the Forbidden Boarders.

Sink is a reluctant warrior, very young and impulsive at the beginning he is a natural at war. Yet he finds that his past is left to haunt him. That the powers that be have destroyed all he loves, and wants in the world. It is his story that is the most dramatic of tales held within these pages. His search for his true nature will expose so much he does not know.

Bruen has lived 300 years, he has served his people well. He has found a way to trick the Mag Comm into telling him the secrets of the world without loosing his own mind. He is old and weary from the trials of a life lived too long. It is his turn to find a solution to the ills that his predecessors inflicted on the universe.
This book was probably one of the most gripping, heart pounding books I have ever read. Took a little to get into it but when I did it was unreal.
Whoever edited the version of this book should take a course in editing/spelling. The many errors are very distracting.
This is my favorite sci-fi series of all time, ahead of Fallen Dragon, and the Commonwealth saga (both outstanding reads themselves). I've bought the Forbidden Borders series in paperback twice yet I still don't have them as I've lent them out so many times. I'm really happy to see that these were brought to e-book format. I haven't read the kindle version yet so can't comment on spelling, format and grammar but I have to give these books 5 stars purely on content.
I read this series many years ago and it is definitely worth the read. The only disappointment I am having is that it is riddled with spelling errors. I have only reached the 3rd chapter at this point and have found at least 20 spelling errors. If whomever was responsible for checking this edition prior to release for the was still in school, they would have received an F.

As I indicated in the beginning, the series is very entertaining. The spelling issues in this edition will annoy you...if you are as obsessive as I am -)!
Entertaining, well written, with philosophical underpinning even. I actually read this trilogy a long time ago, and kept re-reading it once in a while, until my paperback fell apart. So I bought the version.

Some motifs will be familiar to anyone who's read Gear's books before.

I do get a bit tired of most of Gear's female characters being beautiful and big-boobed, and being tortured by sexual perversion - but that's a minor irritation. I like his books.
Excellent book.
