The Lost Recipe for Happiness A Novel Barbara O'Neal 9780553385519 Books Reviews

It took me quite a few chapters to feel engaged with this book. The beginning part centered so much on getting a restaurant going, which I did not find very exciting. After the main character got involved with relationships, it got interesting for me. She had personal and medical hardships, which made life difficult for her, but it was heartwarming to read how hard she worked to overcome these obstacles to happiness. The book included some yummy looking recipes. For me there was too much use of the f-word and other profanity which did not add to the story at all. I would recommend this for readers who like steamy sex and conflict in a story.
It is always hard to put down her books. This book was a change up with Elena as master chef in a ski town. Her health compromised, she struggles with a new restaurant and a new unlikely beau. There are the flavors of the south west in food which is very fun. She also makes us familiar with the whole crew, their problems and strengths, behind their upscale restaurant. This one of my favorites of the this author's books. I did expect and want the book to be longer because of the number of pages, but it was double spaced.
This book isn't your typical chick-lit. The story is rich and warm, the characters are living and breathing and fully believable. It doesn't have any of the typical tropes of female characters that jump to conclusions, or relationships between people who treat each other badly, yet somehow still fall in love. I loved it, and plan to read all of the rest of Barbara O'Neal's books.
Barbara O’Neal is an absolute master! From start to finish, this novel touches the reader in marvelous ways. The raw emotion, beautiful descriptions (setting, food, culture, and more), moving characters and conflicts create a fabulous story I honestly could not put down. This is a book I will definitely read again as the writing is so beautiful I found myself swept away and utterly spellbound.
I thought the storyline of a critically injured middle aged woman, finding a new challenge of being hired as executive chef at a new restaurant was thoroughly engaging. However, it would have been even more engaging without the detailed sex scenes. The story didn’t need these details to be compelling.
This book is filled with a sumptuous setting of Aspen, Colorado, and sumptuous recipes. Screenplay writer Julian Liswood hires Elena Alvarez to open a new restaurant in Aspen. Here, she’ll be the executive chef in charge of designing the menu herself. Though Elena is blond and blue-eyed, she grew up with her paternal grandmother and those are the South West recipes she uses, combined with her time studying cuisine in Europe.

A horrible car accident twenty years earlier continues haunt to Elena physically and mentally. Physically because of her chronic pain and mentally by the deaths of her sister and the man who was the great love of her life.

What makes this book enjoyable is that the characters are likeably flawed. They are imperfect people trying to do their best. Julian is trying to guide his teenage daughter away from the excesses of Hollywood, and Elena is licking her wounds from another failed relationship, while doing her best to launch a successful restaurant. Elena is also likeable because she’d a tough woman in what is traditionally a man’s job and she speaks fluent Spanish, which comes in handy when running a kitchen.
Short review read it.

Powerful stand-alone that is easy to follow and difficult to put down. No editing errors, graphic violence or drag-you-down drama. Recipe's for assorted skill levels included.

Intriguing storyline, incredibly descriptive writing with a dash of paranormal for added zest. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and memorable dialogue.

I may re-read this story and look forward to other works by this author.
