I adored this book when it first came out, and read it many times, via the library. ( I was broke, or would have bought it. 19 years later, I Kindled it because of nostalgia. The pedophilia theme kind of disturbed me in 1994, because it seemed to be jumping on the shock bandwagon for such a horrible crime. Now, I can see how ahead of her time she was, and how gently she handled the victims.

Also, the Hate/Love relationship between the two main characters still cracks me up.

A very engaging story about a mageborn from a high-ranking family having to choose magic over all else. I thought this book was a continuation of the previous three stories in the Windroes Chronicles series, but other than taking place in the fictional world from which Antryg Windrose came, this book is completely set apart.

I absolutely adore all of Barbara Hambly's fantasy novels. Likable characters with flaws and virtues you can identify with, interesting twists and beautifully constructed settings. If you have the chance read these books!
Barbara Hambly's colorful characters, realistic personalities and exceptional story telling make it difficult, and even impossible, to put any of her books down until the final sentence. Then you're immediately searching for more.
I love Barbara Hambly's characters and her ability to set a scene. Her world building is excellent and I have yet to find any inconsistencies in the stories she sets in this world. Her books often have a dark character to them but her protagonists generally offset that with humor and the fact that they are so likable (the good guys), that you want to spend time with them regardless of the trouble they seem to be surrounded by. I love the Windrose Chronicles and this last book, because it has different characters, can stand alone with out the former books in the series. I like the fact that Hambley is adding to this series with stand-alone books.
Lovely! A suspenseful plot which unravels slowly, two love stories that sound REAL, a threat of death, and a cast of characters who grow on you. It,s rare that you remember all the cast, even the secondary characters. It's Hambly's skill that brings this out. Great book!!!!
This book is another wonderful story set in the world of Antryg Windrose, although neither he nor Joanna Sheraden appears in it. I think the Windrose Chronicles happen to be Hambley's best series, and this book certainly lives up to that expectation. ... After she arrives the fur begins to fly between her and her estranged family, but once she meets the prospective groom and his family the fun really begins as she tries to delay the wedding and find out who wants her sister dead. This book is once again a great mix of fantasy and mystery, which seems to be a Hambley staple. Also typical of a Hambley book, the prose just draws the reader in, and enough twists and turns occur in the plot that you are never quite sure what is going to happen next. At various times throughout the book the reader will empathize with each of the main characters, which again points to the wonderful and heartfelt character development that I have come to expect from Hambley. This is a great book, and I encourage new and old Hambley fans to track it down and read it. I only hope she writes a few more stories about the characters in this strange new world.
