When I chose this book, I was expecting the story I had seen in the movie. I was surprised when the book began with another character in another time. The second story was also seemingly unrelated to the story of the family in Montana which the movie was based on. But all the stories are of men who live life on their own terms with little regard for social convention, bound only by their personal sense of right and wrong. The author lets us see the emotional depth of these men and their choices based on their strong personal beliefs. These are men who love fiercely and who never shrink from placing themselves in personal danger to defend those they love. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to those who like stories of people who take action, who live life independently.

Legends of the Fall Jim Harrison 9780385285964 Books Reviews

I would give all the stars to the third story, but I commend all three for marvelous writing.
This is one of the rare occasions that I have come across a book that has both wondrous
language and a story that actually has a plot that has a beginning, middle, and ending,
and characters that live, not just endlessly ruminate on their feelings. I LOVE Jim Harrison
and look forward to getting more of his works.
I have always loved Jim Harrison's writing, but this is the first work of his I read on my kindle. This is essentially 3 separate novelettes. I found the first to have the greatest impact and would have loved to have seen it expanded. The other two were OK, colorful though a bit less memorable. My favorite Harrison novel is "Farmer," which I've read twice. We will miss this great author with the direct Hemingway-type style of writing, since he died recently. He will live on, however, in his many works.
There’s a line in Legends of the Fall that says a lot — if not everything — about Jim Harrison “there is little to tell of happiness — happiness is only itself, placid, emotionally dormant, a state adopted with a light heart but nagging brain . . .”

If you’re looking for happiness, don’t read Jim Harrison. At least not Legends of the Fall, which is actually three different novellas, none of which are remotely similar, with the exception of the underlying strain of machismo. Yes, the book is beautifully written, although Harrison sometimes trips over himself and lapses into incomprehensible musings.

Ironically, the title story is the least interesting of the three. It follows the troubled son of a Montana rancher through a life of adventure and misadventure. It sprawls over so much of the twentieth century, and touches so many lives, it seems to be little more than the outline of a historical novel. The first story, which is set in northern Mexico, is appropriately called Revenge. It’s about two lovers who are brutalized by the cuckolded husband, and the quest for revenge on the part of the male lover. The second story, The Man Who Gave Up His Name, starts as the tale of a financially successful but divorced businessman and father who decides to give away his money, ends up tossing a drug dealer out a window and spends his time trying to avoid the wrath of the dealer’s boss. The plot is totally unlikely, but much of Harrison’s genius is that he doesn’t have to be logical or completely comprehensible to write an enjoyable story.
Jim Harrison is a man who knows how to narrate. This is a collection of three different novellas, all of which have little time for dialogue and instead uses third person narration to tell large scale plots. While the characters in the stories aren't really that different, the plotting and writing make this a good read.

The first story 'Revenge', is about a man who has an affair with the wife of his frienda. Said friend is a drug lord. Yeah, things don't go smoothly. After the initial bout of violence, the novel examines how each of the three key characters feels about the revenge.

'The man who gave up his name' stars a man who grew up with a blue-collar family, made a large amount of money in the oil business, but eventually gets divorced and has a mid-life crisis. Wanting to change, the story follows his attempts to return to his roots a small town man.

In the titular 'Legends of the Fall', we follow three brothers from the beginning of WWI through the end of prohibition. All three have a lot of unhappiness in there lives, particularly Tristan.

Overall, I give this author high marks for style and characterization, but I have to give one star off for most of his protagonists feeling like the same person.
