It’s no secret that I loved <em>Pawn</em>. But we all know that dreaded second book syndrome is always looming, so I was hesitant with <em>Captive</em>. Actually, I’m like that with all second book in a series. While I didn’t love it nearly as much as <em>Pawn</em>, I think it really held it’s own as the second book in the series.

I’m going to be blunt. The beginning of the book is boring and bland. But just stick with it. It’s boring-ness has a point. It really gets you to the meat of the book. You need to power through this one. It get’s better. Once Kitty gets to Elsewhere the story becomes so much more interesting. She learned that Elsewhere wasn’t what she was always led to believe in the first book, but she learns it’s so much more complex that she ever knew in the second book. I love how the story took a turn that I never saw coming. It was definitely a shock when I read it.

The part I didn’t like, which is a carry over from the first book, is that I feel like the romance between Kitty and Benjy is the most boring relationship I’ve ever read about. I would really just like him to be gone bacause I feel like the interactins between them are lacking. I like Kitty so much more without him. Fortunately the story in itself is interesting enough for me to overlook the yawn inducing romance. I honestly prefer Kitty’s interactions with Knox. I don’t even care if they never end up together. They have more chemistry together in a non-romantic setting than Kitty has with Benjy in a romantic setting.

I really like where the story is going and I hope that it keeps up momentum. The ending was enough of a cliff hanger to keep me interesting, but not too much of one to have me wanting to throw my book in frustration of the wait. I can’t wait to read the third book in the series.

This book had me on the edge of my seat at times. I was completely surprised by some character's actions and sometimes I thought I saw what was coming before it happened. Most of this book takes place in Elsewhere, a place where old people, extra children and criminals are sent. Most of society has no idea what Elsewhere is like. They think of it as a comfortable place for older people to go but also fear being sent there if they commit a crime. In reality, it is far worse than anyone imagines.

I still found Kitty almost unbearably annoying. She is selfish and rash, almost never thinking before she acts. In other words, a perfectly normal teenager. So, even though she is quite irritating and I wanted to kick her several times, she really is a pretty realistic character. How many teenagers are actually as brave and unselfish as Katniss when she takes her sister's place in the reaping? Most teenagers really are uncertain of who they are and selfish and have tempers. So, I guess even though Kitty drove me crazy, she was just acting her age.

The rest of the story is great. There are parts that are so awful I can't believe they happened and there are many brave characters that give the society hope. The rebellion is uncertain and as much as I hoped they would succeed, I was also scared of who might die in the process.

There are a couple of twists in this story that really surprised me and I can't wait to see how they are resolved. I am looking forward to reading the final book in the trilogy (if it is only three books and I hope it is).

Fans of dystopian future, young adults or actual adults. There are some particularly gruesome details in this story that may freak out younger teens or squeamish adults, so beware.
Aimee Carter's Captive picks up just about where we left off in Pawn--and let me tell you reading these both as ARCs does damage on the memory bank! LOL Luckily, though we get enough recap pieces from Kitty as the story moves along and this is one fast paced read! Only a handful of days occur in the story but soooo much happens! I've never had so many doubts and suspicions regarding character before. I mean you look at everyone and wonder...whose side are you on? And the answer is never what it seems to be!

Kitty is beginning to tire of life as Lila Hart. It's wearisome being paraded around on Knox's arm all the time. And plus, lately, she's being left out of the Blackcoat's meetings and it's really starting to annoy her being left in the dark so much yet still needing to be the face that everyone sees to help better the world and all that whatnot! And as you might have seen by reaction on Twitter last week, there was quite a shock early on in the book and let me tell you...

It's not until around 27% in, that Kitty is sent to Elsewhere and learns just exactly what this place is. It's not all human hunting grounds as Daxton showed her once upon a time, though there is that. Elsewhere is where we see a lot of action! There's something stirring within the compound and once again, we don't know who to trust. When everyone is a prisoner of some sort, they all look out for themselves, so any secrets don't stay secret for long. Survival is key.

I really enjoyed this one! The beginning may have been a little slow but once Kitty starts to think for herself again and gets herself into trouble, the pace turns and keeps you on the tips of your toes! I also really enjoy Kitty's character, she's always wanting to do what's right, no matter the cost to her own personal being. The world she lives in now, isn't a great one, hence the Blackcoat Rebellion is trying to change that. But so many lives are continually lost, as we see in this one!

For the parts we see of Benjy in the beginning, I didn't feel totally sold on the romance between him and Kitty. Perhaps because he doesn't get much page time, but even when they are together, I just don't feel it. I mean I like Benjy, but there just doesn't seem to be anything romantic about the romance.

Knox on the other hand is a character that I can't get enough of! Though it's almost infuriating how complicated he is! You think he's this but then he's that, and then he does something so contradicting you can't make heads or tails of the guy! Yet I like him! I never really get the vibe that something romantic could happen between him and Kitty, but still...I like him!

The ending to this one was yet another jawdropper! There were so many shocks and surprises that I was left reeling! I couldn't believe any of them! They were just so...shocking! And then the ending totally leaves you with a WTF moment! The wait for the final book, Queen, is definitely going to be killer!This is one series that took me by surprise because it's totally outside my usual scope of paranormal or fantasy reads. But every now and then, there's that dystopian that totally hooks me and this is one of the few that did! I so can't wait for Queen!

If you're looking for an intriguing dystopian with incredible characters and so many jawdropping moments, then The Blackcoat Rebellion Trilogy is one for you!
