Illuminating!!! This was an illuminating and thought-provoking book. This book caused me to ‘re-think unspoken pre-conceived ideas about persons with disabilities. Ironically, the reading of this book coincided with a television show about ‘youth who were missing a limb’ but yet able to ‘walk on water’. It caused me to reflect on my own life and how I might have unintentionally, attempted to influence the lives of my children or how my parents attempted to influence my life. This book serves as a reminder that people really must live their own life—we must ‘follow our heart’ and fight for what we want. We should never settle for less—never give up! We hear of love stories where people ‘let the love of their life ‘go’ and somehow that person returns to them—this could happen. Words that were illuminated as I read include, ‘faith’ ‘hope’, ‘determination’,’ love’ and ‘honesty’. This book can strengthen your faith, encourage belief in the impossible and serves as a reminder of the fruits of the Spirit. The Bible instructs us to ‘speak the truth’ (Eph. 4:25)… If Rachel and Luke had been ‘honest about their feelings and honest with themselves and with each other they might have had that extra 20 years!!! The author has created another masterful work! This is a great read and an inspirational reminder to all of us as we ‘walk through life’. If we walk in love, truth, honesty and have faith we can all have a ‘walk on water’ experience and our own happy ending!!!! Thank you Ms. Garner! I look forward to the next book!

Walk on Water Josephine Garner 9781479296569 Books Reviews

I came to Walk on Water full of my devotion to Solomon's Blues. That was my mistake. This talented author has many voices and many focuses in her writing - Walk on Water was very different and only reinforced the gift of this new author. That said, I came expecting to read a book of the depth and sweep of her first and had to refocus my expectations. Walk on Water is a very good book upgrading the genre of romantic fiction. The characters were well drawn and believable, the story interesting and intriguing, and the voices clear and compelling.

Now, I am ready for her next offering and to be surprised and challenged to hear her voices and focus on her vision - not my own. Thank you for keeping us entertained and stimulated and refusing to be placed in a box, Ms. Garner!
In discussing the recent book "Walk On Water" by Josephine Garner, two previous commentators referred to the fact that the ethnicity of the characters was never revealed. For one person this was seen as a negative, and for the other it presented the challenge of our being able to decide for ourselves to which parts of the human race the characters belonged. For me, however, the lack of obvious pointers to the ethnicity of the characters was a decided plus, especially in our current situation where racism continues to be so much part of our lives and where we have seen the strongest reaction to injustices in racial situations. I see the lack of identification of race in "Walk On Water" as being one of the strengths of the book, giving us a breathing space in our tendency to be somewhat obsessive about one aspect of a person's background - the colour of their skin. Now as to the social differences between the characters in the book - that's a different matter!
The book flowed easily and kept my interest. The characters and events were comparable to those of real life. I really liked the fact that the author did not give a lot of characters at the beginning of the book (whose roles were not involved until the end of the story) and leave it to you to remember who they were! Who they were and their association with the leading characters was always very clear. A good book, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this type of reading.
We all know someone who, at least once in their lifetime, set their standards so high that they failed to walk on water. In Ms. Garner's second book, we learn that, despite the roadblocks other people placed in Rachel Cunningham's path she did not fail the tests. In fact, Rachel rose above the challenges, walked to the other side, and gained the prize. Kudos to Ms. Garner for a splendid story line that kept me captivated, and also for letting me decide the ethnicity of the characters.
This was indeed the best love story I've read in a very long time. I actually read the book twice before deciding to share my review. Even after the second reading I was still "awakened" and "renewed" and hungry for what I hope will be another book. It had everything... great plot...vulnerable yet strong characters, and sex scenes tastefully crafted.
I praise the author for writing this book, not just because of the characters themselves but for essence of true unconditional love and acceptance that fills the book from cover to cover.
If I didn't know any better I would swear the person portraying Rachel's mom was based on my lunch time conversations with the author about my mother. And oh Mrs. Betty Sterling...you want to dislike her but instead she's really an angel in disguise.
I highly recommend reading this book and promise if you read this with an "open heart" you too will experience an awakening.
I was a little hesitant about this book because I thought it might be the typical story about long lost loves finding each other again later in life. However, it was so much more than that. The added layers of the middle class vs. the upper class in addition to the insecurity of Rachel and the unfortunate handicap of Luke gave the story more depth. The author was able to capture my attention and evoke strong emotions from me. I'd recommend this book to most my girl friends and will probably end up re-reading it in the future.
