The author does a fine job world building and I came to enjoy the coming of age side of the plot. Cassiel Winters joins Earth's new space academy because she wants to get in the organization that her brother disappeared from. Not all is what it seems and the read can sense their is something not right with how the academy is treating her. You learn that her brother would not of wanted her to join but stay anonymous. The love interests added to the plot and help support the growing up, self-realization part of the story. To be honest I enjoyed the first 80% of the book the most. The author fills you in on some back story elements towards the end in a manner that disrupted the flow and I never got back into the rhythm of the tale.
One group of alien males are highly attracted to Cassiel physically. A large part of that set of interactions is rebuffing their attentions. I enjoyed the awarked moments she has to deal with surrounding the cultural differences. Yet, that last 20% of the story didn't bring the resolutions together as well as I'd prefer. The story's ending works but requires the next book to tie up the established conflicts, lover issues, and alien invasion.

This is definitely one of the most enjoyable books I have read this year and I so want to know when the next book is due as there is no sign of it yet!! It really is unputdownable and despite it being a rather large book, I didn't have the desire to skip a single sentence. Very much a character driven series with a fast moving plot. A few typo/ grammatical issues but very minor. Just a really great read for anyone who doesn't mind a touch of scifi
If you love Sirantha Jax or enjoy the Ice Flight series, you will love this. Whilst it is a little lighter on the romance it also reminded me of Gena Showalters' Alien series. This is scifi written for lovers of UF or UF/Romance who may be looking to broaden their range.
But a very unsatisfying & abrupt cliff-hanger ending. I feel kind of robbed b/c there were definitely slow parts that required major slogging, but I hung in there waiting for the payoff (to get to the resolution of at least a few unanswered questions.) But there was no satisfaction. It's like the book ends in the middle of a paragraph. Obviously it's a shameless ploy to get readers to buy the next book. My opinion of the heroine started low (she was a real whiner with very little common sense). Then, she gained a bit of my respect when she started to wise up, . Learn a little strategy and then even started to employ it. but then slipped back into being a weakling with minimal sense of self constantly looking for external validation. I did feel compassion for her because she was constantly surrounded by intrigue & illusions and it was hard for her to know who to trust. That said, she refused to accept and leverage her strengths. She was in a unique position to facilitate understanding & even diplomacy between warring races. But she continued to be a cry baby and maintain blind allegiance to humankind. This book was decently copyedited but could use major editing. On the upside, I did enjoy the author's world-building and there was some good action & suspense.
This review begins with a precautionary warning. Sky's End came to me as a young adult sci-fi ARC from the publishers. After reading it, I must say that it is most definitely not a young adult novel, and in fact should be classified as new adult, if not actual adult fiction. This book would not be suitable for younger teens unless they are relatively mature. Many scenes were very forward and lots of sexually charged comments/thoughts occur from all characters in the book.
Cassiel is a young cadet in the human space-military academy. She is trying to pass academy so she can go look for her older brother, who went missing while on a military mission several months back. In her search for her brother, the commanding officers come to her and inform her they need her help with a mission to infiltrate a ship of a new alien species. Command informs Cassiel that human women are highly sought after by other species in the galaxy, and that they need someone who seems innocent and unsure to go and seduce this new alien race in order to work her way into their good graces to gather intel. Desperate for information on her brother, Cassiel agrees to the mission despite the advice of others. While on the mission, things go terribly wrong and Cassiel eventually ends up stuck with this alien race with no hope of rescue. She must keep her wits about her while surrounded by many good-looking warriors on the alien ship, and rescue both herself and her brother while trying to guard her heart.
With the warnings out of the way, this book was surprisingly good. I usually approach sci-fi books with a little bit of apprehension when they come from debut authors because they can either be very stereotypical or very cheesy. This book was neither. The world building the author put into this book was excellent. I was able to easily picture each element of Cassiel's world and really immerse myself in what was going on. It took a fair amount of time for me to get out of a young adult mentality while reading this book, once I just decided to pretend it was more of a romance novel than a young adult novel the disjointedness was resolved in my mind and I really enjoyed the rest of Cassiel's journey. Cassiel is strong, smart, and highly determined to control her own destiny and I think she is an awesome heroine for the college age crowd. I'm excited at the emergence of a new adult category because it gives teens in the 18-21 age range heroines they can identify with and follow as they go through yet another transitional period in their lives. I would absolutely recommend this book to any college aged readers who are looking for an intriguing story.
