But of course they do not agree. Science tists don't. That is why it is science, not religion. (Sometimes, some of the most influential, oldest agree between them to stop young, new sciencetist from spreading new, young ideas. After all, if you spend 50 years provning the same thing, you are not going to jump up and down shouthing with glee because this undergraduate comes running and tells you :"Professor, professor, you were wrong in that first paper that you have based your whole carreer on, and almost got a Nobel prize."
Belive med, the Professor it well aware of the almost; and he (occasionally she), has not stopped working on it. The undergraduate will not get a PhD, and certainly not tenure. And would some people frame a coworker for murder over tenure? That, and much worse.
I digress.

This story is all about the Passenger. We get an alternative explanation. If you really cannot stand Urban fantasy or Lovecraft. Dead dove, do not eat.

I am reading all of these books mainly because I loved (and miss) the show. I liked the first two books in the series but this one not so much. It's pretty weird in a totally unexpected way, and while I am a big Science Fiction fan, this is not "American Gods" and Lindsay isn't Gaiman.

I just didn't find the premise of possession (demonic or otherwise) all that interesting. In fact, I'd rather think that our beloved Dexter is just psychotic. I don't need some sort of bizarre explanation for why he does what he does.

Anyway the fact that this one aspect of the Dexterverse is not appealing won't stop me from reading book four!
I’ve read all of the Dexter books, and well, what can I say I’m in love with the dastardly divine Dexter Morgan. In this book though, Jeff Lindsay takes a departure from the sarcastic-man crime drama (to the chagrin of many readers apparently) and moves into uncharted territory, attempting to not only explain but to personify the mystical presence we have come to know as Dexter's dark passenger. In this book, we begin to understand the true depth of Dexter's tortured soul. So deeply we lament for our downtrodden Dexter, one might consider the theme as the classic “man attempts to find his place in the universe” type drama; and while we have read a million of those, there is something about Dexter's sarcastic bite that never makes him seem pitiable; his self-awareness is extraordinary. I don't wish to give away too much of the story, but the crime really takes a back seat in this one, as Lindsay opted for a more existential flavor, allowing us to watch Dexter evolve. But don't be put off by that; this story is not lacking in suspense, not by a long shot, as something dreadful is stalking Dexter, and without his dark passenger, he has no capacity to protect himself or those around him. Rita's children hold a pronounced position in this story, which is not surprising; but the kids are just as witty as Dexter is, so I can forgive the (young budding killer, follow in Harry's footsteps) set-up, and the ending is edge-of-your-seat action packed.

Lindsay's writing is slick, sardonic, and imaginative. Dexter expresses thoughts and feelings we might only utter under our breath. So Bravo Jeff Lindsay! I applaud you for taking the risk in exposing the less than savory, emasculated side of Dexter as all men, even serial killers, can feel that way at some point. Frankly, I am tired of superheroes. Lindsay has given the world an imperfect monster we can all love, despair for, and cheer for. Dexter gives us hope in that we might all understand and connect with our shadow.
The first book was fantastic, creative fun. The second book was a little formulaic, but serviceable. I wasn't in a hurry to read the third book, but got around to it and found it simply dreadful. No spoilers here since the first chapter of the novel tells you this the Dark Passenger is actually some demon/god/thing from ancient times that moves around telling people to kill other people. Huh?

Not much later in the novel we found out these demons can sense each other and they're secretly at war or something like that (which makes almost no sense). I kept reading the book thinking at some point there would be a rational explanation for all this stupidity. I was sorta hoping Dexter was going insane and these were all his delusions... they aren't.

So instead of being psychological crime thrillers, I guess the Dexter novels are paranormal adventures?

Now look - I like high fantasy novels, and I even like books that mix fantasy with reality, like The Green Mile. But, this is so absurd and out-of-the-blue it made no sense. For 2 books we established a real world in which a damaged Dexter tried to contain his urges. Now, we find out he's being driven by some demon and he can telepathetically communication with other possessed individuals and his damaged step-child (who can also now sense his "shadow").

Seriously, it is that bad. There are whole sections dedicated to these demons floating around humanity, etc. It's so mind numbingly bad, I can't believe it's from the same guy who wrote the first book.
